Loyola College Center for Values and Service
What is SumServe?
Established in 1992, the Loyola College SumServe program provides participants opportunities to serve and learn at community based agencies working with people who are economically poor in Baltimore City. Selected applicants participate in an eight-week service immersion program over the summer months while living together as a community in on-campus housing. Some students join the program to continue serving with a particular agency they work with during the academic year. Others enroll because their schedule does not allow time for significant involvement in community service during the school year. What all SumServers have in common is a commitment to 20 hours per week of community service with their placement site, and an equal commitment to gathering with the rest of the SumServe community for weekly reflection and prayer.
SumServe Program Goals
What past SumServers have to say about the experience:
AThe support and insight of my fellow SumServers both challenged and comforted me.@
Janine LeGates, SumServe 1997
AThe entire program was a powerful experience and we were always challenged by it.@
Bob LaPointe, SumServe 1995
ASumServe is the best thing I have done at Loyola. Although it was difficult to stay at school for the summer, the friendships I made and the experiences I gained were well worth it.@
Laura Peterson, SumServe 1995
