What is S.O.S.?

S.O.S. is a unique service and educational opportunity in which a small group of incoming students, experienced student leaders, and a faculty member or administrator stay in a safe, simple place in the heart of Baltimore City exploring the issues of poverty and homelessness. No prior service experience is necessary. S.O.S. is a program specially designed for students who are new to Loyola College. A team of student leaders, faculty and administrators review applications and select the participants. Those selected to participate are asked to contribute $30 to help cover the expenses of the program.

Each experience includes…

hands-on service with people who are poor and/or homeless.

reflections and discussions on the service experience.

interaction with Loyola students, faculty and alumni who are deeply involved in and committed to service.

input from experienced service providers who know the issues and the people.

selected videos and readings to illustrate the issues explored during the experience.

What past "S.O.S.ers" say…

"I don't think I could have asked for a better or more significant introduction to the school and city. I definitely encourage any incoming student to take advantage of S.O.S."

Theresa Alexander '99

"S.O.S. provides a unique bonding atmosphere for incoming students. Participnats acquire a real sense of their new city and its people. No one leaves the experience untouched."

Corinne Lalli '00
