BARC is one of the nation's largest agencies addressing the needs of people with mental retardation and is dedicated to improving the quality of life of retarded citizens through vocational training, residential services, supported employment programs, support services and advocacy.Volunteers work directly with clients as tutors, Foster Care Big Brothersand Big Sisters, recreation aides, Friendship Exchange program 'friends'and other 'hands-on' volunteer positions. Volunteers assist with special events and fundraisers, work on committees, help with special maintenance projects at one of our facilities and many other activities that improve the quality of life for our clients.

Best Buddies
Best Buddies of America is a college-based program designed to promote very special friendships; friendships between college studentsand persons with mild to moderate retardation. Call the Community Service Office at (410) 617-2380 for the date and location.
Catholic Deaf of Baltimore/Deaf Interfaith
Catholic Deaf of Baltimore provides many services for the Deaf Community in Baltimore. This organization assists the religious education classes for the deaf at the State school in Columbia and Frederick,MD, visits the deaf unit at Springfield State Hospital and visits Foxwell Memorial apartments.

The Children's Guild
The Children's Guild is an interdisciplinary facility serving approximately 130 emotionally disturbed three to twelve year-old children and their families. Volunteer opportunities include: Assisting classroom personnel in their tasks as a classroom aide. (e.g. working with individual students as a tutor, researching and preparing curriculum materials,bringing a special skill to the classroom like storytelling, dramatics,art activities, etc.)

' Working in administrative areas or offices Volunteers must attend an orientation session at the Children's Guild and should plan to attend on-going in-service meetings.

The Hearing and Speech Agency/ Gateway School
HASA is a private, non-profit United Way organization dedicated to the treatment of hearing, language and speech disorders. Volunteers may assist with classroom activities, library, lunch and recess duties.There is also a need for people to help with handling calls on the TDD &clerical work in the interpreter referral service.

The League: Serving People With Physical Disabilities
The League serves the persons with physical disabilities through vocational, recreational and social programs. We need volunteers as tutors and welcome assistance in the social service areas, as well as in the recreation and swimming programs. We are open Mon.-Fri. from 8:30am-4:30pm.

St. Vincent's Center
St. Vincent's Center is a residential treatment facility for abused and neglected children, ages 18 months-12 years. Our need for volunteers includes tutors to help the children focus on and reinforce basic educational skills, in-house volunteers to work with the children in the residential cottages, computer programmers to assist with our needs, and technical writing students to help with the newsletter.

Villa Maria' Residential Treatment Center for EmotionallyDisabled Children
Villa Maria assists emotionally disabled children between the ages of 5 and 12 in developing the capacity to function effectively in their community. Loyola students are needed to help children complete their homework assignments and improve their academic skills.
