Caroline Center, sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, is a job training/education program for women in East Baltimore. Newly established in 1996, Caroline Center's goal is to assist women who are living in poverty to gain the tools, the self esteem, and the knowledge necessary to obtain a job that pays a living wage.

For many women who come to the center that first step is a GED, so volunteer tutors are needed to supplement classroom learning. Tutoring takes place during the normal school day between 9 am and 4 pm; volunteers could come one (or more) days a week for a few hours. Basic literacy tutors are also needed to prepare women for the GED classes. Literacy tutors are needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon-2:30 pm.

In the spring of 1997 several Loyola College students began the Somerset Club, an afterschool club for the middle-school age children of the women. Children in the Somerset Club receive help with homework, have activities that are fun and educational and take occasional weekend field trips. The Caroline Academy, and afterschool program for children in grades K-4 also needs volunteers to assist with the enrichment activities that make up the program. The Academy runs every school day, Somerset Club every Monday and Tuesday; both children's programs meet from 3-5 pm. We could also use some clerical assistance on a weekly basis.
