Panhandlers always seem to approach me and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do when they ask for money…if you give them money, they'll probably just spend it on drugs or alcohol…Why can't they just get a job and work like everybody else…They just keep having kids so they can collect the welfare money… they could get off the street if they really wanted to… if any of these thoughts have ever entered your mind then you should consider…

U.N.I.T.E. (Urban Needs Introduced Through Experience), a unique service and educational opportunity in which small groups of students, staff, faculty and/or administrators, led by and experienced service provider and student leaders, take a closer look at the issues, concerns and realities of persons who are poor and homeless in Baltimore City. No prior service experience is necessary to participate. A typical U.N.I.T.E. weekend runs from 6:00 p.m. on Friday to about 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Participants stay in an apartment immediately above Beans and Bread Meal Program and Homeless Outreach Center in the Fells Point area of Baltimore. Each participant is asked to contribute $15.00 to assist with weekend expenses.

Each weekend experience includes…

"An informative, enlightening, educational, challenging, fun weekend."

"I'm so glad I came this weekend. It was the first time I had ever worked so closely with members of the homeless population. It made me feel so wonderful knowing that, even if it was just for one afternoon, I was doing something to help someone else."
