Yours is the share in the work of the Lord's Spirit who draws us together into one, who makes harmony out of discord, who sings in our hearts the lyric of all that is holy. You help us to respond to God's word, to acclaim the Gospel, to sing of salvation in Christ. Yours is a ministry that gathers our many voices into one grand choir of praise!

There is always a great need for music ministry in the following areas:

Music Ministry plays a critical role in liturgical celebrations. Music aids the prayer of the community and helps make our worship truly life-giving. A variety of musicians are needed each year to minister at Sunday Eucharist and various special campus celebrations.

Chapel Choir

The Loyola College Chapel Choir as a whole consists of two individual choirs:

  • 6 p.m. Choir: consists of 40-60 singers with several accompanying instrumentalists. Traditionally, the 6 p.m. Choir focuses on contemporary vocal music and offers special music as preludes or during the Presentation of the Gifts.
  • 9 p.m. Choir: consists of an ensemble of 8-12 singers. This "quieter" Mass offers many opportunities for instrumentalists and singers alike as many instrumental pieces for preludes, Presentation of the Gifts, and the Recessional are intertwined with contemporary vocal music.

Singers and instrumentalists in each choir minister at Sunday Eucharist and at special celebrations throughout the academic year, including the Mass of the Holy Spirit (September), the Festival of Lessons and Carols (December), and the Baccalaureate Mass (May). Recognized for their musicianship and joyful music-making, the Chapel Choir was invited by the Archdiocese of Baltimore to be part of the visit of Pope John Paul II in October 1995 -- representing Loyola and young adults as part of the "Morning Celebration" at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Chapel Choir released its first CD, "Mass Appeal: Sundays at Six" in the spring of 1996.

Rehearsals for the 6 p.m. Choir are held Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 in the Alumni Chapel, with a warm-up rehearsal each Sunday at 5 p.m. A flexible rehearsal time will be scheduled for the 9 p.m. Choir by its members at a meeting in the beginning of each semester. If you are interested in Chapel Choir, please call the Student Coordinator at x.2447.

Cantors and Student Musicians

Singers and instrumentalists are needed to provide music for weekend liturgies. This is a ministry for those willing to commit themselves to practicing their craft -- working with others to enable the song of God's people to rise in joyful praise. If you are interested in becoming a cantor or instrumentalist for Sunday celebrations, contact the Student Coordinator at x.2447.

Handbell Choir

The Loyola College Handbell Choir performs several times each semester and is limited to 10 qualified musicians. Prior experience is not a necessity; however, you must be able to read and perform simple rhythmic patterns. Weekly rehearsals are scheduled each semester, and vary according to the schedules of individual members. If you are interested, e-mail George Miller or call him at x.2449.
